History

The Motherbaby International Film Festival is an integral part of Sage Femme’s educational outreach. It was conceived in June of 2007 and launched in Portland, Oregon that September at the Gentle Birth World Congress.

The first Motherbaby festival screened five World premieres: Political Midwifery, by Seattle filmmaker Barbara Bain, It’s My Body, My Baby, My Birth, by San Francisco midwife Maria Iorillo, Baby-led Breastfeeding, by Kitty Franz, Three Mamas, Six Babies, by Portland midwife Jennifer Gallardo and filmmaker James Westby and Children of Tak’alik A’baj from Sage Femme.

Waterbirth International screened a working copy of Pregnant in America by Steve Buonaugurio that later premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. The Business of Being Born by Ricki Lake, Abby Epstein, and Amy Slotnick was the main feature on Saturday night. The audience responded with spontaneous singing and dancing after the screening.

The Gentle Birth World Congress, free Baby Expo and Motherbaby International Film Festival lasted three days from September 28-30, 2007.

In addition to seven feature films, categories of shorter works included: Baby Milk, Finding The Words, Home Birth, and Waterbirth.
